Where can I go to discern?

CANALI HOUSE OF DISCERNMENT

Becoming a priest is a big call. It can be hard to discern the call without guidance and direction. For over ten years the Canali House of Discernment has existed to provide guidance and direction for men discerning the call to priesthood. Canali House is a house of discernment, meaning that the residents aren’t yet part of the priestly formation program (or even a pre-formation program). Rather, the residents continue to work or study while receiving guidance and direction from the resident Vocations Director.

HOLY SPIRIT SEMINARY

Holy Spirit Seminary (formerly Pius XII Seminary) has been forming men for priestly ministry from across the Province of Qld since 1939. Men from the Archdiocese of Brisbane, as well as the Diocese of Cairns, Rockhampton, Toowoomba and Townsville have received their formation at Banyo, a place of spiritual significance both to the seminary community; as well as to the indigenous owners of the land.

THE PONTIFICAL BEDA COLLEGE

The Beda College in Rome exists specifically to form older men for the ministry of priesthood. Men who have come from other denominations, or who have discerned the call late in life, travel to Rome to undergo their formation

Canali House

Canali House is a place of discernment set up by the Archdiocese as a place where young men can “test their Call” to priesthood.

Young men come and live in Canali House while continuing to studying, work and go about their daily life. With a resident priest at Canali House discerners are encouraged to undertake daily prayer, Mass, theological study and gain first hand insight into the life of a priest.

HISTORY OF FR JOSEPH CANALI

Joseph Augustine Canali was a pioneer, architect, engineer and priest. He arrived in Brisbane with Bishop Quinn in 1872 and supervised the completion of the Cathedral of St Stephen. He studied for the priesthood and was ordained in 1879. Because of his enthusiasm for the mission of the Church and his personal holiness, he became known as the Apostle of Brisbane. In 1915, at the age of 73, he fell from a tram while returning from a sick call and suffered serious injuries. He died in hospital a week later.

The house is designed to engage residents in the human pillar of formation, whilst exposing them to introductory theology studies and ministry commitments in a parish. They receive regular direction from the Vocation Director, as well as being paired with a priest-mentor. The twelve month program is designed to help men decide whether they will (or won’t) continue on the seminary.
